3 Types Of Bo Staff And How They Are Used

bo staff

Bo staff has lasted longer than any other weapon in history. For centuries now, a bo stick has been used-not necessarily as a weapon-by people as a tool.

Although we have seen bo staff being extensively featured as a stick pulling bo tricks in movies like Pacific Rim and Enter the Ninja, a bo staff wasn’t always this cool and amazing.

Before we move onto the different types of materials that make different bo staff, it is important to look at the origins of this simple yet flexible ninja weapon.

Bo Staff Through The Ages

People in Southeast Asia had been using a bo staff as a farming tool for centuries since it was first used as a weapon- documented in Okinawa, Japan around the 15th century.

During the time of the Sho dynasty, people of Okinawa weren’t allowed to carry swords or blades. So they improvised what was a wooden stick used to carry water buckets by the farmers and fashioned a harmless looking weapon out of it.

Gradually, a bo staff was adopted by the ninja as a striking and thrusting weapon in combats and modification in the design of bo staff led to greater variety of maneuvers a holder could do using a bo stick.

Now let’s look at three different types of bo staff and how they are used today.

Hardwood Bo

The initial use of bo staff as a weapon in Okinawa led to development of an artform called bojutsu, that created special techniques of effectively deploying a bo staff for training and combat purposes.

The first ever bo sticks used by trainees were made from hardwood. It was a strong material that was easy to hold and spin. The typical length of bo staff was and is still around 6 to 8 feet. Unlike a Jo Staff, which was 4 feet long, a bo staff was supposed to be just a few inches short of one’s height.

The hardwood bo staff provides strength to the stick to take and absorb varying degrees of shocks but it was also heavy. A heavy bo staff was limited in its range of moves and speed at which it can be used.

A bo staff was held by one or two hands (facing opposite directions) and divided into 3 portions to accurately predict and carry out moves using a hardwood bo staff. But gradually, hardwood bo staff was getting flak for its heavy weight and wood chipping that would change the whole balance of the bo staff.

Rattan Bo

This led to creation of a rattan bo staff. Rattan, or bamboo is considered a perfect material for a bo staff since it not only provided sturdiness to the bo stick, but also reduced the weight of a bo staff. The bo staff also became grippier and flexible compared to hardwood bo staff.

Some trainers of bojutsu actually want their bo staff to be tapered, and so a bo is carved off towards the end. This changes the balance of a bo staff and leads to different aerodynamics while training various bo tricks like spin, strike, rotate, etc.

The people who use bo staff for performance and sticks solely, as opposed to training for hours with them to perfect their thrusting action-prefer this lightweight bo staff. While those ninja trainers prefer heavyweight bo staff as it strengthens their arms after months of practice.

Metal Bo

A metal alloy or aluminium bo staff is a recent variation of traditional bo staff. Although one can change the balance and weight of their wooden or bamboo bo staff by adding metal inlays or iron studs on it, a full metal bo staff is considered more high end now.

A metal bo staff is heavier and generally difficult to grip for long hours. That is why it is preferred by bo staff performers who perform bo staff tricks in front of the audience or by themselves. These are martial arts enthusiasts who prefer more versatile moves over fighting tactics in their bo staff techniques.

The performance bo staff is decorated with various carvings or painted in flashy colors( if the metal itself isn’t flashy enough) to make the bo staff look cool during spinning or rotating.

These were the three different types of bo staff available today! Hope you found this article informative and engaging.

7 Things To Consider When Debating Crossbow vs Compound Bow

In this article, we will look at the differences and the similarities between a compound bow and a crossbow. We’re going to compare and contrast the different features and benefits of each one and then decide the winner that you would want to carry into the field.

Crossbow vs Compound bow-which weapon is best? Although the answer is whichever one suits your hunting styles and needs, it is still important to look at different features of each and compare the two weapons according to each criterion.

Speed

Our first focus will be on the speed of each hunting weapon. There’s no doubt that when it comes to the speed of a bow and  arrow, the crossbow is going to win almost every time.

Today’s crossbows are shooting in the high 300 feet per second to the mid 400 feet per second range, which is substantially faster than pretty much any compound bow on the market. A typical crossbow is a 330 foot per second bow and go upto the low 400s. So the speed department is definitely won by the crossbow.

Accuracy

All bowhunters know that speed isn’t what kills, accuracy is what kills. You have to hit your target in the right spot in order to be an effective and efficient hunter. When it comes to accuracy which one of these weapons wins?

Both a compound bow and a crossbow are more than capable of being extremely accurate in the hands of the right shooter. But  crossbows get a nod in terms of general accuracy for one reason.

A crossbow has a lot less variables when you shoot it because of the way a crossbow is designed. When you pull the trigger to shoot it, you don’t have to worry about torque like you do with a compound bow. You don’t necessarily have to worry about things like cam-timing and rest-tuning that you need to worry about in order to get compound bows to shoot properly.

A lot of hunters or even non-hunters are able to pick up a crossbow and shoot it very accurately in a very short period of time. So in the department of accuracy, a crossbow wins.

Effective Range

While we’re discussing accuracy and the ease of shooting these weapons, let’s discuss the effective range in a bow hunting situation. A common misconception that people have about the differences between a crossbow and a compound bow is that  the vast majority of bow hunters believe that the maximum effective range on a whitetail deer with a compound bow is going to be about 40 yards.

There are going to be some folks that will shoot beyond that and some that don’t shoot quite that far but 40 yards seems to be the de facto standard for most bowhunters. When it comes to crossbows, they are marketed as  your next rifle or a hundred yard shooting device and there’s no doubt about it.

Crossbows are certainly capable of being extremely accurate at long ranges but accuracy at long ranges doesn’t necessarily translate into the ability to hunt with them at those ranges. Most experts- including a lot of the crossbow manufacturers- believe that crossbows are still a 40 or 50 yard weapon.

So regardless of which hunting weapon has a better effective range, there are a lot of variables in a hunting situation-like the hunter’s blood flowing to his heart, pumping a lot of adrenaline- that affect accuracy at  longer ranges which inevitably is going to be diminished in a hunting situation for the vast majority of people.

Effective range of these weapons for white-tailed deer is  going to be about 40 yards with a compound bow and 40 to 50 yards with a crossbow. So, really in the end there is not much difference between these weapons and we call it a draw.

Noise

This is an area where the compound bow really outshines the crossbow. The ability of an animal to hear the sound of a bow is unparalleled. When you shoot a compound bow, it is significantly quieter than a crossbow and the reason for that is very simple.

Crossbows are generating a lot more power and energy with  speed that comes with a trade-off of a lot more noise. Today’s crossbows are significantly quieter than they were in the past as they have a lot of string dampening and silencing on them that you can see built into these bows but they are still considerably louder than a compound bow.

Weight

Let’s dive into another area where  the compound bow really outshines the crossbow-the weight of the bow. When you see a compound bow, you see it has got a pretty big and heavy stabilizer on the front and it weighs six and a half pounds on average. Crossbows by contrast, weigh between eight and a half and nine pounds so the weight of the compound bow is significantly less.

Even if the weight difference is only two and a half pounds but if you look at it as a percentage of the weight, the compound bow is about 25 to 30 percent lighter than a crossbow making them a little bit easier to carry around the woods with you.

Maneuverability

Today’s crossbows are significantly narrower and have a much smaller footprint than the ones of days gone by when a crossbow was basically a vertical, a big bow or a horizontal bow which took up a lot of space. New and modern crossbows are more maneuverable today than they used to be.

But there’s no doubt that when you get up in a tree stand with any of these weapons, a  compound bow is going to be much more comfortable than a crossbow. Crossbows are really good for hunting off the ground but when getting up in a tree stand, always go for the compound bow.

Follow Up Shots

Finally, our last criterion is going to be follow-up shots. In the majority of hunting situations, a crossbow is a single shot weapon. It’s going to be very difficult for anybody to shoot and possibly miss an animal with a crossbow and then be able to re-cock that bow and get an arrow on it quick enough and quiet enough without a lot of movement in order to get another shot.

Everyone can miss a shot and it will certainly  happen a lot more with a compound bow than it’s going to with a crossbow.

With a crossbow while standing on a smaller tree stand platform, it is very difficult to take a follow up shot but your chances of taking an accurate first shot with a crossbow are more anywhere you hunt. So it is kind of a paradox that everyone gets out of in his or her own way. We can’t declare a winner on this one.

Final Words

As you see, there are many pros and cons to each of the two hunting weapons. Crossbow does better at speed, accuracy and range while compound bow is better at being less noisy, lighter and more manoeuvrable. Choose what best suits your style of hunting.

Top 10 Deadliest Ninja Weapons In History

ninja weapons

Along with the samurai, the ninja are one of the most famous figures of ancient Japan. There are many myths and legends about ninja weapons which are often fetishized by movies and pop culture surrounding Medieval Japanese society.

Ninja weapons are just as legendary as the Ninja themselves. Most of these ninja weapons came to be because ninjas were not afraid to invent new weapons and scrap together these lethal devices from everyday tools.

Here is our list of the top 10 deadliest ninja weapons.

Kunai- Ninja Knife

This ninja weapon took a lot of skl to master. This was because a kunai was a small knife and was commonly used as a throwing knife by the ninja.

Like most ninja weapons, kunai was cheaply produced by scraping together bits and bobs of various gardening tools. But once a kunai was ready, it could be a ninja’s third hand.

This ninja weapon would be used for close or long range combat depending upon the skill of the ninja. If the ninja had mastered the art of knife throwing, the kunai would become a death sentence to the opponent.

Ninjato-Ninja Sword

Ninjato is amongst the most popular ninja weapons, thanks to pop culture. It is a straight short sword that is said to have been part of the standard equipment of the ninja.

This ninja weapon was short enough to be carried on a ninja’s back and be drawn from there. A longer sort like a katana would have restricted the ninja’s way as he was climbing and if carried on his back, he wouldn’t have been able to draw it due to the long blade.

Rumour has it that this ninja weapon was often just a shortened katana. In order to save resources the ninja sometimes took the swords of their victims and made ninjatos out of them.

Kusari Fundo- Ninja Chain

This gruesome ninja weapon was a  combination of a long chain ‘kusari’ and a heavyweight ‘fundo’ at the end which resulted in a powerful ninja weapon.

With the help of this ninja weapon, the ninja could defend themselves against their enemies. The kusari fundo was helpful in areas where wearing a sword was prohibited. This ninja weapon could easily be hidden and was mainly used for self-defence.

Kusarigama- Ninja Chain With Sickle

To create this ninja weapon, all a ninja had to do was to attach a kusari fundo to a sickle. This is how the kusarigama was invented.

The combination of a throw cut and chain weapon makes the kusarigama very versatile ninja weapon. In order to deploy this ninja weapon, the sickle was held in one hand while the other swung the weighted chain.

With the help of this ninja weapon, the ninja could keep opponents with swords at a distance so that they couldn’t use their weapon and then the weighted chain could be used to disarm them.

Kagi- Ninja Claw

This famous ninja weapon has hooked the imagination of the present generation because of Wolverine. The fearsome iron claws could perform various tasks, slitting throats was one of them.

This deadly ninja weapon looked like a bear’s paw and was probably made from sickles or similar objects of utility. Ninja would deploy this weapon to attack opponents as well as to ward off blows and disarm opponents.

Shuriken- Ninja Stars

The term ‘Shuriken’  includes all short Japanese throwing weapons and not just the well-known ninja stars. This ninja weapon exists in surprisingly many shapes, from stars to swastika and from bolts to ordinary knives.

This ninja weapon was carried in hidden pockets in the ninja jackets or pants and sometimes, these ninja weapons were even smeared with poison so that in case the enemy survived the injury itself, he would still die of poisoning or infection.

However, this ninja weapon only had a range of a few meters to inflict real damage which is why it was mainly used to stop pursuers by showering them with many shuriken.

Kakute- Ninja Ring

Kakute was a ninja weapon shaped like a ring and was usually worn on the middle finger so that the spikes were hidden in the hand. If you know of kunatons, this is the ninja version of that weapon.

This ninja weapon was especially popular amongst female ninja who preferred the ninja weapons that could be easily concealed and could be quickly deployed with guaranteed results.

This ninja weapon had spiked on the ring which were sometimes dipped in poison. This ninja weapon could be used to attack an enemy when he least suspected it for example by suddenly scratching his face or slitting his throat. The rings were also well suited as climbing aids.

Shikomizue-Ninja Sword Cane

This ninja weapon is a hidden sword which looks like a walking stick and was mainly used during the Meiji era when carrying swords was prohibited. This ninja weapon was also worn by government officials and samurai who disagreed with the ban but did not want to be punished.

Probably the most used ninja weapon to date, the hidden sword stick was a stealthiest weapon a ninja would wield especially when he was hired for a high level assisanation in the feudal Japanese society.

Tanto-Ninja Blade

This ninja weapon didn’t belong specifically to ninjas. It is a typical Japanese combat sword that had a slightly curved blade, was single edged and less than 30 centimeters long.

This ninja weapon was originally part of the equipment of the samurai and mainly used by them for self-defence but the ninja seemed to have taken a fancy to it as well. This ninja weapon was perfect for assassinations. There were many ninja weapons based on a basic tanto design.

Shikoro-Ninja Saw

This was one of the most basic of all ninja weapons. Shikoro was a tool mainly used to open things up. The small double-edged saw was also very light and easily concealable. Ninja weapons can’t be clearly distinguished from everyday tools and a ninja saw is no exception.

This ninja weapon was used to cut open a fence or make a hole inside a wooden wall to look through and also to cut ropes. This ninja weapon was also used for self defense to fend off attackers which makes this ninja weapon, one of the most versatile gadgets that a shinobi could carry.

Final words

As you can see when having a look at the above selection of ninja weapons that ninjas were quite different to other fighters such as the samurai whose weapon selection was much more limited and really huge in size.

Best Crossbows

A crossbow is an incredible hunting weapon. It is one of the modern hunting weapons and is the best when it comes to small game and big game hunting. We are explaining its hunting benefits. It is an advanced version of a traditional bow and arrow.

It is designed like a rifle or a pistol and comes with a trigger mechanism. However, it does not shoot bullets, rather it shoots darts that can take down a small game as well as big game. Following are the reasons crossbow is the right hunting weapon for every hunter:

No Training Needed – Easy to Use

A crossbow is actually very easy to use and requires no training if you are new to this weapon. As mentioned before, it has a trigger mechanism and works like a pistol. You just need to aim at the target and pull the trigger to shoot darts.

Cheapest Hunting Weapon

Crossbows are easily the cheapest hunting weapon around. Not just the price of the weapon is lower compared to other hunting weapons, it also allows you to reuse the darts. You can take down a deer with one of the darts and then use the same dart to hunt another.

Ideal for Disabled Hunters

Crossbows are ideal for disabled hunters. There are many disabled hunters in the US who struggle to find the right hunting weapon that serves their needs. However, a crossbow is just the weapon they require. They can handle it very easily and also use it well and easily!

Beginner Friendly

For beginners, this is an ideal hunting weapon as well. It is very safe for beginners and is very simple to use. They don’t need to learn or train, rather they already know how to use it. I mean, they just need to pull the trigger to shoot darts.

Crossbow Hunting – Everything You Need to Know

Best Crossbows

The crossbow hunting was once essentially saved for incapacitated hunters, numerous states, have as of late changed their laws regarding crossbow hunting and allowed people to use these weapons for hunting.

Some states at present grant the license to do crossbow hunting during arrow based weaponry season. However, there are certain states that still don’t permit that. Anyways, overall, it is a great hunting weapon for every hunter.

In this way, before you choose which weapon to utilize when you hit the forested areas for hunting season, ensure you’re comfortable with the upsides and downsides of crossbow hunting.

Lower Draw Weight

Moreover, crossbows have amazingly substantial draw weights. Most hunters utilize a draw weight of around 50-80 pounds with a compound bow; crossbows as a rule have draw weights more than 100 pounds and now and again even 200 pounds.

Though velocity relies upon different factors notwithstanding the draw weight, crossbows can in any case commonly shoot shots recognizably quicker than a compound bow.

Easy to Use

Perhaps the easiest to use hunting weapon is the crossbow. Remember it is shaped like a pistol or a rifle and all you have to do is pull the trigger to shoot darts. This makes it perfectly easy for beginners and the disabled hunters. Apart from being easy to use, this is the cheapest hunting weapon as well.

Velocity and Range

While the specific velocity changes relying upon the draw weight, draw length, and the particular bolt and embellishments utilized, most compound bows shoot bolts at around 250-330 feet for each second.

Crossbows, then again, ordinarily shoot jolts at 350-450 feet for every second. This extra velocity converts into marginally longer successful ranges, compliment directions, and harder-hitting jolts when they arrive at the creature.

Remember, however, that crossbows are still generally short-range weapons. As should be obvious from this crossbow ballistic number cruncher (it’s around 3/4 down that page), even the most impressive crossbow can’t measure up to the velocity, vitality, and level direction of a centerfire rifle.

Indeed, they still for the most part shoot somewhat complementary than compound bows, yet exact range estimation is still very important.

All things considered, 40-50 yards is likely the greatest successful range for most deer hunters utilizing a crossbow.

In case we’re being straightforward, this isn’t a lot more distant than the greatest range of most compound bow-furnished deer hunters.

5 Self Defense Weapons I Prefer for Different Reasons

self defense weapons

We all know how crucial it has become to carry a self defense weapon on a routine basis. Attackers are not afraid of anyone. Every now and then, someone is being victimized by them.

Anyways, if you carry a weapon, there is some chance to survive. But, not all of these weapons are effective enough.

I have a few weapons that are all effective, and I use them for different reasons. Following are my five self defense weapons and the reasons to use them:

1. Stun Gun Flashlight for Flashlight Option

Stun gun flashlight is actually a stun gun that features an additional option of flashlight. It is the finest weapon in my collection. The reason why I prefer it is the flashlight option.

I was attacked twice while I was getting back home late at night. The reason is that attackers find it easy to victimize people when it is dark outside.

The flashlight is a wonderful feature that allows me to enlighten my path and see if any attacker is coming towards me.

Since I can see them from a distance, I can quickly get ready to face them. Then, I have a stun gun to serve my survival.

2. Pepper Spray for Non Lethality & Effectiveness

Well, I usually prefer lethal weapons to take on the attacker, pepper spray is a non lethal weapon. However, it’s effectiveness makes me prefer it.

It is a small sized spray that does not cause injuries, but causes serious effects to defend me against attackers. When I spray it on the face of the attacker, it causes serious irritation to his eyes.

Sometimes, it can even cause temporary blindness. However, it does not cause any serious issues. After some time, the attacker is able to get back on his feet.

3. Pen Knife for Secrecy

Pen knife is my self defense weapon due to its secrecy. I can use it secretly against the attackers, and that is why I prefer using it. It is basically a small sized pen, however, there is a blade hidden or concealed inside it.

No one can figure out that it incorporates a blade inside it. It looks like a real pen and can be used for writing. However, it does have a blade that allows me to injure the attacker.

When an attacker attacks or tries to attack me, I can remove the cover from my pen, and use the blade to tackle him.

4. Brass Knuckle Knife for Combination of Weapons

Brass knuckle knife is the most lethal self defense weapon I have. I prefer it because it is a combination of two weapons. There is a knuckle duster and a blade is attached to it.

This allows me to use two weapons at the same time. I am able to use both one by one as well.

Generally, when an attacker comes, I can first deliver him a punch and then use the blade to inflict injuries. I believe this is the ideal way to defend against the attackers.

5. Belt Buckle Knife for Ease of Carry

Another hidden blade I use is the belt buckle knife. This knife is usually concealed inside the bett. To tackle an attacker, this is the closest weapon I have. Since it is quickly accessible, I prefer using it.

For instance, I can quickly remove the buckle and open the blade to fight the attacker if he tries to attack me. So, this is the reason why I use some of this hidden blade.

So, which is your self defense weapon for what reason? I have told every weapon that I use and there is a reason behind every weapon I use.
